General Maintenance

  • The tree staking and wrap should remain on your tree for one year.
  • Landscape fabric should be kept covered with either mulch or stone so that the sunlight will not cause the material to break down.
  • When mowing around your plantings, be sure to direct your clippings away from the plantings and mulch. If clippings are blown into the mulch, it is possible that weeds will germinate on top of the fabric.
  • For all flowers, perennial, or ground cover areas, re-apply granular weed preventer each Spring and again in mid-Summer if needed.
  • Always remove root shoot (suckers) that may occur at the base of trees, because they will pull nutrients from the tree.
  • In cold winter climates, young evergreens and other newly planted trees and shrubs should be protected from wind and severe cold. Burlap or straw is typically used to provide protection.
  • Mulching is just not for aesthetics. In the Summer, it helps hold moisture around the
plants and in the winter, it helps to insulate the roots.

Fertilization

  • The frequency and rate of fertilization necessary depends upon the type of plant.
  • For flowers, fertilize every two to three weeks with a water-soluable fertilizer.
  • For shrubs, fertilize during the Spring/Fall with a granular all-purpose fertilizer. You can use a watersoluable fertilizer once a month in the Summer as needed.
  • For trees, fertilize during the Spring/Fall with either spikes or a granular fertilizer. Can use watersoluable fertilizer once a month in the Summer as needed.

Seeding, Sodding & Established Lawns

In order to establish a good root system, it is recommended that during hot and dry conditions, watering should be done every day if substantial rainfall has not occurred. The best time to water your lawn is in the morning. If watering is completed during the late evening hours, a fungus problem might occur. The easiest way to achieve uniform watering and proper timing is with an irrigation system. After your lawn has germinated, there is no need to rake the straw off of the lawn. The straw helps to hold moisture around the new grass, and will decompose into the soil. When mowing your lawn, it is best to set the mower at the highest setting, and always bag your clippings to help reduce thatch build up.

Pest & Disease Control

Check your plantings in morning or evenings. Look for chewed or disfigured leaves, spots or moldy patches on leaves, and irregular marks on trunks and stems. Simple controls such as picking off and destroying infected leaves and stems are an important part of pest and disease control, especially in the early stages of infestation. Check at our Garden Center for the best chemicals to apply for the insects or fungus.
