Project Scope

The request from the owners of this home was simple – they wanted to be “at home in paradise.” They wanted their backyard of their traditional home to be a place where they could not only relax and unwind, but entertain, swim and take a few practice swings to improve their golf games.

Location Parameters

Prior to exterior design renovations, the home featured an existing deck jetted hot tub. The backyard of the home was small for all the features the homeowner wanted, especially a pool. In addition, privacy was a major issue. Because the home was located in a residential neighborhood, the challenge was to create a sense of retreat and seclusion within a limited area.

Design Plan

Challenged by the space limitations, the Scots design team maximized the available space and even created more usable living space through a multi-level design. A zone for a man cave was created by building out an inset into the back of the home. The large, high-definition TV and fireplace created a fantastic space for all seasons. Up above, the roof of the man cave was reinforced and covered with weather-resistant decking surrounded by custom handrails. Access to this new space came directly from the home’s existing family room.

A fully-equipped outdoor kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances created another unique gathering space. Next to the outdoor kitchen, the existing deck was expanded and redesigned for multi-purpose storage. The previous storage area was converted into a full bath and changing area, and also housed the components of a dynamic audio system that was great for entertaining. The existing hot tub was recessed to create a more-custom look and intimate space. And even though access was a challenge, the homeowners’ dream of a backyard pool came true with a Viking fiberglass pool was lifted into the space over the home’s roof. Large, deck jets in the pool created a soft, fountain display, and for kids’ play.

An upper elevation overlooking the pool area was created for a one-of-a-kind putting green. And seclusion and privacy for the entire space was achieved with a thoughtfully-designed arbor system and massive gas-log fireplace.
